“Teachers open the door, but you must enter by yourself.”

I will provide differentiation for your child in the classroom with different academic subjects and projects for all students to partake in.  Many of the projects will have opportunities for your child to show their abilities and stretch their minds.  With that said, please see the letter that both 4th and 5th grade teams sent home a few weeks ago.

I have recently sent this letter home regarding GATE services on 9-6-2017.

Hello 4th and 5th grade parents,

We have changed the structure of our Math program in the fourth and fifth grades and want to clarify any misconceptions about the GATE program. We will be doing more to meet the needs of all our students. We will not regroup for math everyday, as there are many limitations involved in this method.

With the encouragement of Miss Lee, and after attending several trainings on differentiation within the classrooms given by the district, we are using a model of regrouping within each classroom. This would give greater flexibility and students who need more time on mastering a certain skill would have the time to do so, while the students who completed the task successfully, would work on involved projects. Students can work with their peers, as well as with the teacher in a small group setting.

Weekly quizzes and classroom participation will help us determine which students are ready for advanced work, and which ones need basic instruction. Every Friday, students will be grouped according to GATE identification, skill levels, etc. and will rotate with the teachers to work on intervention and enrichment activities. Students may receive projects or leveled activities that they will continue working on throughout the week.

We hope this letter relieves some of your anxieties over the changes that have been made. We are working hard to help each student gain as much as they can, according to their abilities, mode of learning, interests, and needs. Weibel is working hard to move along with the current standards and methods. This model of grouping is something that many schools in the district have already been using for some time and have seen success with.

If you have any questions please contact your child’s teacher. We are open to answering questions and clarifying any misconceptions. We will also be explaining this at Back to School Night.

Sincerely,

The 4th & 5th Grade Teams
